As the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp, so does our focus on keeping families healthy. October marks the beginning of flu season and now is the best time to protect yourself and your loved ones.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu activity typically peaks between December and February, but cases can start rising as early as October. That's why public health experts recommend getting your flu shot before the end of the month. It takes about two weeks for your body to build up immunity, so an early vaccination helps ensure you're protected when flu season is at its worst.

Why the Flu Vaccine Matters

The flu isn't just a bad cold. For some it can cause serious illness, especially young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions. Getting vaccinated each year lowers your risk of getting sick and helps protect your community, too. When more people are vaccinated, the flu spreads less easily.

Even if you still catch the flu after vaccination, your symptoms are likely to be milder and your recovery faster. As the CDC reminds us, that can make a big difference during the busy fall and winter months when work, school, and family schedules are already packed.

Simple Ways to Help Avoid the Flu This Season

Vaccination is the best defense, but it's not the only one. You can also reduce your risk by:

  • Washing your hands often. Especially after coughing, sneezing, or touching shared surfaces.
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.
  • Staying home if you're sick to help protect others.
  • Wiping down high-touch surfaces like phones, keyboards, and doorknobs.
  • Getting enough rest, eating well, and staying hydrated. small steps can strengthen your immune system.
