A new school year comes with exciting opportunities, in new grades, new classes, new friends, and new relationships. While exciting, these transitions naturally create apprehension in students and parents alike. Since August is both National Back to School Month and National Wellness Month, we want to remind parents that the best ways to protect their student's physical and mental well-being as school starts are to: - Get Curious Even among kids, admitting you are anxious is highly stigmatized, so getting them to open up about how they feel can be challenging. If you think something is off, use empathetic conversation starters to ask about what they are experiencing, such as "I've noticed you seem down during dinner recently. Can we talk about what that may be?" By leading with compassion and validating their feelings, you are better able to support them.
- Get Organized Before school starts, develop a family calendar with all upcoming extracurriculars, school events, and holidays. Setting expectations and schedules can help with time management and avoid the unnecessary stress of "last-minute" commitments.
- Get Healthy The importance of a healthy sleep schedule, healthy diet, and regular exercise on academic performance on physical and mental well-being cannot be understated. Consider making routines at home that will benefit your child in the classroom, such as daily family walks and removing all screens before bedtime.
- Get Positive Helping students maintain a positive mindset can be a big challenge, especially once grades start coming in. Before the year starts, set academic goals and celebrate every victory along the way to achieving it. By focusing on the positive, you are building their self-confidence and encouraging them to do their best.
- Get Informed The adage "it takes a village to raise a child" has never been truer in the age of social media. If you are worried about your child's wellness, take some time to research what support is available both during school hours and after. Finding the right school counselor or out of school program, like the Family and Community Resources Healthy Relationship program for teens, could make all the difference.
Good luck to everyone in this new academic year! Family and Community Resources is in the corner of all students and parents and is always here to ensure that everyone feels safe, respected, and supported in school and out. Speaking of fun events to put on your family calendar, consider joining Family and Community Resources for the 2025 Walk for Survivor Safety and Community Cultural Fair on October 25!
