I was killing some time on the internet the other day when I came upon an amazing quote by Diane Ackerman, "I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I have just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well." It really stopped me in my tracks. The width of one's life?
So often we are so busy going through the motions of life that we don't stop to think about how fleeting our time here really is. So my challenge for you is simple. The year is soon coming to a close and most people will be spending some time thinking about our resolutions for the coming year. While you are thinking about what your resolutions might be challenge yourself. What is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal - BHAG? Is there something you have always wanted to do, even if you feel it might be impossible, but never attempted it? This is your year to do it. Take a class, strive for a promotion, find a cause you are passionate about, do a service project, walk in a road race, read a book a month, start quilting, run a marathon. If there is something you've always thought about doing, do it.
Once you identify your goal, even if it seems impossible, write it down. In addition to writing down your goal, list the steps you need to achieve it. Breaking up your goal into manageable steps will not only make it less overwhelming, but will highlight to you what you need to accomplish it. For me writing something down makes it become real. If I list things out then I know what I need to do. If it's just in my head, it makes it easier for me to ignore it.
We're not trying to change the world here just adding something into your life which makes it a bit more fulfilling. Let me know what your BHAG is going to be this year!
Live your life fully.
